Technical Application Manager at Zymergen
Emeryville, CA, US
The Technical Manager for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) projects will work closely with the Vice President of Materials and other members of the technical and business teams to identify organic-materials opportunities for the Department of Defense (DoD) and their suppliers.
This role will involve a large quantity of outreach and interaction with DoD researchers and personnel to understand and align DoD materials needs with our internal activities and/or to develop new directions for our materials research.
As such, the Technical Manager must speak the language of materials engineers to understand their specifications and be able to transform this into property needs and the classes of materials which might deliver such performance. The position will also require excellent non-technical communication skills to interact with military personnel and discuss end use / in field requirements and ensure that there is sufficient interest from within the military.
An ideal candidate is someone who has existing relationships within the DoD, a firm grasp on the breadth of DoD needs, and a broad understanding of polymer applications. Demonstrated ability to understand the relationship between chemical structure (i.e. monomer structure) and materials properties is a strong plus.
Immediate activities include:
Developing relationships within the DoD, DARPA, and other government agencies
Assisting with the development of materials R&D and product strategies
Extensive travel and the ability to work independently and build business relationships.
