VP, Product Operations at Zymergen

In view of our business development, Zymergen is now looking for a Vice President of Product Operations that will lead our efforts around manufacturing (as fermentation and DSP, polymerisation) to deliver end products.
The individual to fill this role will have the opportunity and should have the acuity to work with individuals throughout the organization and to interface with individuals in other organizations such as service providers for industrial scaling and consumer products companies.
Successful candidates should have demonstrable skills in negotiating business transactions and a strong understanding of the manufacturing in biotech and processes for working with vendors and customers alike to deliver products through all stages of the supply chain.
The VP, Product Operations will report to the President of Products and be part of the Products Leadership team.
Responsibilities and Deliverables
This new role will have responsibility for organizing the team and ensuring timely delivery of Product (e.g., Polymers, Compounds, and potentially Monomers) to world class customers.
Define Operations Strategy, including a roadmap for Strain to Polymer/Compound delivery
Develop partners and a network to support delivery, potentially leveraging the current Customer base of the strain improvement business
Develop KPIs for Operations and implement an Operations cadence
team and organization
Leverage Zymergen functions (fermentation, development) and add new ones
Manage Quality Assurance and Fulfillment
Proven leader in the biotech space, preferably someone who has experience in the materials’ space
Ability to define and build an organization from the ground up, overseeing biotechnology and synthetic chemistry (for short term sourcing/ evaluation as well as final product steps in polymerization/compounding)
Strategic leader with the ability to deliver operationally
Domain expertise in fermentation/ purification/ polymerization operations preferred
Effective in a matrix and very fast growing organization
Experience with serving Industrial Customers
Able to handle competing priorities as we develop competencies
Experience in contracting with LSPs/ Tollers and manufacturing partners
Experience with global Operations (customers will be in Asia, USA and Europe)
This role will require working independently once up to speed on our current activities and is expected to require frequent domestic travel.
