Zymergen is looking for a Director to build and lead a team to provide customer-facing services for our Technology division. Team members will include: solutions engineers to rapidly prototype software tools needed by our internal customers; technical writers to document and train users on our core software product and add-on custom tools; and account managers to liaise with internal and external customers.
Zymergen’s internal software runs the range from a custom LIMS that collects and organizes large volumes of raw and analytic data from a variety of sources and formats, to tools to orchestrate and automate the high-throughput workflows that empower our scientific staff to construct and test new microbes at large scale, to powerful machine learning, bioinformatic and analytic tools for modeling genomes, designing DNA, performing quality control and driving experimental analyses. The Technical Services team ensures smooth adoption of product features by our internal users, through documentation, training and custom integrations into existing business processes.
As Director, you will lead a diverse team critical to our organization’s long term success. You will represent your team internally at Zymergen, understanding the needs of your customer organizations and using those to formulate your team’s objectives, priorities and critical timelines.
Represent your team to the rest of Zymergen: Establish your team’s various roles and capabilities within the organization, and understand company-level needs by engaging with executives and senior management
Set short, medium and long-term objectives and metrics of success for each sub-team, and coordinate with the broader Technology department on delivery
Grow the team through recruiting, interviewing, and community outreach
Manage complex priority tradeoffs, establish clear objectives, and communicate widely
Facilitate communication throughout the engineering organization
Establish a healthy management and team culture: Empower your team members at every level to reach their full potential through thoughtful and honest feedback
B.S. or higher in computer science, biology, or related field
10+ years relevant work experience, including 5+ years in a software engineering organization, and 5 or more years of management experience
Demonstrated ability to communicate between business and technology domains, and/or between technical disciplines
Strong strategic thinking skills, in particular, the ability to define clear objectives in a context of rapid change and ambiguity, and adjust when required
Demonstrated experience leading service-oriented teams with a range of different skillsets
Demonstrated instinct for mentoring and motivating employees to build a productive, challenging and motivating team culture
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated ability to be effective in a range of areas of technical competence
