We are currently seeking a Sr. Director, Business Development to join our fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in La Jolla, CA. The Sr. Director, Business Development plays a key role in identifying, evaluating, and implementing corporate development opportunities within the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

Responsibilities

With guidance from the CBO, responsible for driving the entire deal-making process from opportunity identification to successful closure working with potential strategic partners and internal stakeholders
Builds and leverages relationships with pharma and biotech companies to identify and execute on strategic partnership opportunities
Translates ideas into business opportunities by identifying the right strategic partner(s), developing and maintaining relationships at those partners at the right levels within their organization, and catalyzing potential opportunities to increase and diversify SGI’s revenue and increase shareholder value
Builds and pressure tests business cases in partnership with internal and potential external stakeholders, including financial models, technical assessment, strategic alignment and other qualitative metrics, to prioritize opportunities and determine the project's financial attractiveness
Structures and negotiates licensing, partnering, or asset sales for SGI and works closely with the functional groups (e.g., scientific, finance, legal, IP, etc.) to successfully close those transactions
Provides essential business and corporate development support by maintaining the deal tracking database, leading project teams to build and maintain deal momentum, updating corporate presentations, and identifying/removing deal road blocks
In conjunction with the CBO, R&D, and Finance conducts regular analysis and prioritization of internal and external business opportunities
Coordinates preparation of proposals, presentations, term sheets, and negotiations for the acquisition of licensing opportunities and technologies, as well as joint ventures and collaboration agreements
Required Skills

Extensive network of contacts in the biotech and pharmaceutical industry.
Broad knowledge of genomics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical R&D, biologic drug manufacturing and depth in at least two of those areas
Understands evolving scientific, market and regulatory trends as well as the current and future needs in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry
Excellent negotiating skills with an emphasis on identifying and gaining internal and partner support for win-win deal structures
Strong analytical skills and expertise in financial analysis
Ability to identify the connection between the company’s science and technology and evolving market needs to identify, define and quantify business opportunities for SGI
A trusted and valued partner to management, scientific and support staff, and external partners that can and has shown the ability to earn the respect of her/his colleagues and counterparts
Comfortable managing numerous projects simultaneously and independently defining priorities based on SGI goals and objectives

Requirements
Required Experience:

5-10+ years of relevant business development experience with small and large biotech/pharma companies
Demonstrated, successful execution of multiple deals
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Scientific background (PhD/MS in Science/Engineering or equivalent training and experience)
Additional degree in business administration, finance, or economics, strongly preferred
